Spalding IBC’s Chelsea Tomlin was just one win away from being crowned a national champion when she lost in the final of the ladies’ Under-25s singles.

She faced England Under-25 team-mate Chloe Wordingham (Wellingborough), who had won the competition in 2013.
However, Tomlin found her opponent in fine form and lost in straight sets.

The Spalding IBC player had not dropped a set en route to the final during last weekend’s event at White Oak Bowls Club in Kent.

Having won her first match against Amy Hewison, from the Cyphers club, in straight sets, Tomlin faced Commonwealth gold medal winner Sophie Tolchard in the last eight.
Tomlin continued her fine form to dispatch Tolchard – again in straight sets – to set up a semi-final clash against Cathy Edwards from Whiteknights.

With one eye on the final, Chelsea again found her form to record another straight-sets victory and leave her one match away from the title.

A spokesman for Spalding IBC said: “Despite losing in the final, Chelsea can be proud of her achievement in being a national runner-up.”
