The conditions were right for a Fenland tradition to return for the first time in decades last week.
As the flooded Cowbit Wash iced over, it was the perfect and rare opportunity to skate outdoors.
And people came from miles around to take part including a host of players from the various Peterborough teams.
For those like huge ice hockey fan Ernie Farmer (5) it was a rare chance to practice outside.
His mum Chloe said: “Some of them were on the ice as soon as the sun rose.”
“It was a fantastic experience. Ernie said he enjoyed playing ice hockey with people much older than himself they all gave him some top tips and were fantastic with involving him.
“Our skates and equipment got a little muddy but it didn’t take long to clean up and it was definitely worth it.”
Regular player Jamie Gilbert said: “I’ve been skating for over 30 years and it’s ten years since I’ve been able to skate outside.
“Some of us had played 30 years while there was also Ernie who just started playing.
“Another kid didn’t have a stick so he borrowed mine.
“Everyone remembers their first time being outside on the ice and it was nice to get to make memories for the kids.”
