Hussey happy as seven-up Holbeach United see off Star to extend great winning run

Peterborough NS 1
Holbeach United 2

Holbeach United’s impeccable form in the Future Lions UCL Premier Division continued with a battling 2-1 victory at Peterborough Northern Star on Saturday.

Make-shift right-back Josh Ford fired the Tigers into a 20th-minute lead direct from a free-kick at the Branch Bros Stadium to ensure a 1-0 half-time lead.

Sam Wilson hauled Star level just after the break, but Billy Smith – who enjoyed a decent spell with the city side earlier in his career – grabbed the winner for Danny Hussey’s side within 60 seconds of the restart.

That secured Holbeach’s seventh league win on the bounce and sees them move six points clear of South Holland rivals Pinchbeck United in fourth place.

Tigers boss Danny Hussey was impressed by his sides’ reaction to conceding a goal just after half-time and was delighted to see the winning run continue.

“I enjoyed the win,” said Hussey, who is yet to lose a league game as Tigers boss. “I thought the performance was good – but it could have been better.

“Star, to be fair to them, are one of those sides that work really hard and make life difficult for you. So, in that regard, I’m really pleased that we got over the line with the three points.

“To have won seven games on the spin is great, I suppose I shouldn’t be asking for more.

“But my mentality is to always demand more from the players.

“Probably my favourite element of the win is that we responded so well to their equaliser.

“I’m aware that this squad hasn’t always responded that well to conceding goals in the past, but to go straight up the other end of the pitch and re-take the lead really pleased me.

“It shows that the lads are really buying into what I’m trying to do here, which is great.

“There is still plenty of room for improvement, but it was a tough game for us and I’m pleased that we came out of it with another win.”

Jonny Lockie made his Tigers debut as a second-half substitute in the victory.

Holbeach next host Boston Town in the Future Lions UCL Premier Division on Wednesday night (7.45pm).

Tigers: Drury, Ford, T Smith, Braithwaite, Clay, Jackson, Bird (Hamilton), Avis, Tricks (Lockie), J Smith (Davies), B Smith.

Attendance: 67.
