Hurst’s winning treble seals A1 Transport Regatta glory at Welland Yacht Club

Visitor Ivan Hurst walked away with Welland Yacht Club’s A1 Transport Regatta trophy on Sunday after a clean sweep of wins.

Hurst was one of a number of members from neighbouring Witham Sailing Club to join the open meet, making a total of 18 people competing in 13 boats – albeit only two were of the same class.

That meant position on the water wasn’t a guarantee of a result.

Race one got under way with the 505 from Witham having to return to shore to correct a sail head issue.

As the boats made their way up river to the top of the course, most of the fleet started to fall into handicap order.

With a few managing to better their position, it was Witham’s Hurst who took the win from Alan Cox, with the pairing of Andy Prior and Tom Bell third and father and daughter pairing Paul and Lucy Burton fourth.

CHAMPION: Ivan Hurst.

The course was slightly shortened for race two to make up for the section shielded by trees which, due to the direction of wind, was proving tricky to navigate.

With everyone getting away without a hitch, the fleet kept tighter packed this time – giving hope of a change in positions under handicap.

Hurst managed to take his second win from Cox in second, with Brian Cobb third and Mark Holland fourth.

Sticking to the same course, the final race of the day played out very similar with Hurst making it a clean sweep of wins.

Cox was second yet again, with Cobb third.
