Hugo is the cream of the crop at Spalding

Teenage talent Hugo Kedzlie held off the challenge of almost 150 other members to win the 0-14 handicap category in Spalding Golf Club’s April monthly medal competition.

Kedzlie (five handicap), who is the current under-14 midland counties champion, won by one stroke with a nett 68 (73-5=68) at the Surfleet course.
The 13-year-old finished just ahead of Lawrie Haley (77-8=69) who just shaded second spot on countback from Raich Growdridge (81-12=69) and Paul Johnson (78-9=69) after all three carded a nett 69.

Mark Mitchell won the lowest gross score prize with a superb 72, which included an impressive six birdies.

Other leading scores in this category came from: 70 – Nick Illingworth; 71 – Stephen Camm; 72 – Mark Mitchell, Carl Sewell, Richard Woods, Mal Wray and Darrel Cross.

Meanwhile, James Quinton (88-19=69) came out on top in the 15-28 handicap category with a nett 69, winning by one stroke from Alex Callaway (98-28=70).

Martin Baker (88-17=71) secured third spot on countback from Paul Coddington (90-19=71), both with both carding a nett 71.

Other leading scores in this category were: 72 – Chris Brooks, Ian Ford, John Walker, Simon Brand and John Camm.

The lowest gross score prize in this category was shared between James Quinton, Martin Baker, John Camm and Robin Roffe, who all scored 88.
l In an opening season warm-up friendly match, Spalding Golf Club’s third team enjoyed a narrow 4.5-3.5 win against the club’s ladies.

Tydd St Giles Golf Club

Ian Gerrard took top spot by two clear points in Tydd St Giles Golf Club’s men’s April Stableford event.

His score of 38 points was enough to win the Division One prize ahead of Julian Davie (36 points) in second. Ady Bills, also on 36 points, was third on countback.

In Division Two, David Pluck (40 points), saw off Phil Boardman (37 points) and Mike Parker (35 points) in second and third respectively.
Down in Division Three, Martyn Hale-Smith edged out Steve Boor on countback after both scored 38 points, with Gary Hotson one point off the pace in third.

Seniors’ section: Result: Thorney Lakes 3 Tydd St Giles 1 (Baz Smith & Brian Gough lost 3&2, Mike Parker & Russell Doy won 1up, Brian Newby & Terry Sambridge halved, Kerbad Daboo & David Doubtfire halved, Dennis Savory & Steve Skoulding lost 3&1, Trevor Sewell & Phil Martin lost 4&3).

Seniors’ monthly medal: Division One: 1st Lee Smith 81-12=69; 2nd Richard Ward 90-16=74; 3rd Tom Jolly 88-11=77.

Division Two: 1st Trevor Sewell 91-19=72; 2nd Russell Doy 92-18=74; 3rd John Ormiston 95-19=76.

Division Three: 1st Brian Gough 96-22=74; 2nd Richard Talbot 97-22=75; 3rd Dave Morris 100-23=77.

Division Four: 1st Steve Skoulding 91-25=66; 2nd Tony Illsey 99-28=71; 3rd Andrew Harding 109-28=81.
