Holbeach Weight Training Club duo power to North Midlands Championships glory

Holbeach Weight Training Club enjoyed a superb return to the North Midlands Powerlifting Championships as two members secured wins in their respective categories.

Partners Helen Round and Harry Figg couldn’t have been more delighted when they both took first place in their respective categories at the event which showcased lifters from Derbyshire, Lincolnshire, Leicester, Nottinghamshire.

In the under-52kg class, Round opened with 80kg in the squat discipline, followed by 85kg and then 87.5kg for the final lift.

Moving onto the bench press, Round’s three lifts were 47.5kg, 52.5kg and 55kg – an amazing effort considering that was in excess of her own person bodyweight.

In the final discipline, the deadlift, she successfully lifted 97.5kg, 102.5kg and 105kg.

Her best lifts from each discipline totalled 247.5kg, which was enough to see Round crowned North Midlands champion – and made her the first-ever lady from the Holbeach club to win a major powerlifting title.

She is next in action at the British Classic Bench Press Championship in February.

Having watched his other half triumph, Figg then began his quest for a championship trophy.

He progressed extremely well through the squat with successful 240kg, 250kg and 260kg lifts.

Figg then kept himself in the running for the title with good lifts of 165kg, 170kg and 175kg.

Everything now depended on the deadlift, which offered him the final opportunity to achieve a winning total.

His first two lifts of 240kg and 255kg were declared good by the judges, but he recorded a “no lift” when attempting 265kg in his third and final effort.

However, all was not lost because his overall total from all three disciplines was an impressive 690kg – which saw him clinch the title.

Figg will be back in competitive action later in the year.
