Two wins, 12 goals, none conceded and a new signing – it’s been a fine Christmas for Holbeach United.
Danny Hussey’s side thrashed Sleaford Town 9-0 and Pinchbeck United 3-0 in their festive fixtures to move within three points of Uhlsport United Counties League Premier Division leaders Quorn.
Sitting fourth and with games in hand on most of those around them, the Tigers are ready to pounce on the top of the table.
And they’ve also boosted their ranks by bringing midfielder Danny Setchell back to the club from higher league Wisbech Town.
“I’m really delighted,” Hussey said. “We didn’t play particularly well against Pinchbeck, but to still come away with a 3-0 win is great so I will take the positives.
“I think we just looked like we’d had too good a Christmas and they were strong across the pitch.
“We weren’t doing what we were meant to and ended up worrying about a team we shouldn’t have been worrying about.
“But we got the result and that’s what matters.
“The Sleaford game really was a good performance.
“I know it was 9-0 but they had spells where they gave us problems but we played well and I’m just pleased to get the points.
“If we win our game in hand then it takes us up to second.
“We’re sitting in a good position which, given our budget, I don’t think many expected us to be in.
“We’ve been secretly going about our business and we’ve got to keep performing to continue to do that.”
This Saturday, Oadby Town are the visitors to Carter’s Park with Setchell set to return to the squad in a second spell as a Tiger.
“It’s really good to get Setch back,” Hussey said. “I spoke to him the other day and he’d left Wisbech. He wants to play at a higher level but maybe Wisbech wasn’t the right club at the right time for him.
“He said he wanted to get back to enjoying football again and we were looking at bringing in another midfielder, so it was a perfect match really.”
“We’re missing Josh Ford for three weeks while he’s away and Ryan Oliver is also absent so Setch will come into the squad.
“In a way Oadby are our bogey side as something usually goes wrong against them, be it playing and winning for 70 minutes before the floodlights fail or them not being able to raise a side.
“We need to go there and put in a good performance.”
