Holbeach hoping to do deal for Clay – and keep Allen

South Holland-based Peterborough Northern Star defender Jonny Clay has emerged as a transfer target for Holbeach United.

Clay, who won five trophies in two seasons during successful Peterborough League spells with Pinchbeck United and Moulton Harrox before stepping up with Star, has established himself as one of the UCL Premier Division’s top defenders this season.

The central defender was one of the stand-out performers as the city side demolished Holbeach 4-0 at Carter’s Park last month – and that showing caught the eye of joint bosses Graham Drury and John Chand.

A seven-day notice of approach has been lodged by the Tigers – and Drury is hopeful that he’ll land his man.

“I can confirm that we’ve put seven days in for Jonny,” said former Stamford supremo Drury. “He’s a local lad and a player that is doing very well in the UCL.

“He’s very strong and is a player who has been identified as one we’d like to bring to the club.

“He did very well against us and it’s now up to him really. If he agrees terms, we’d be delighted to have him on board.”

Should Clay opt to join Holbeach, he could serve as a replacement for Jonny Allen, who is interesting Spalding United. Drury has spoken to Tulips chief Pat Rayment about the versatile defender – but remains confident that he’ll decide to stay at Carter’s Park.

The co-boss added: “I’m not one for the seven day formalities, if Jonny wants to go to Spalding he can.

“I’ve spoken to Pat. I’m aware of his interest in the player and he’s aware of my view on the matter.

“But I’ve also spoken to Jonny and he told me that he would like to stay here.

“As far as I’m concerned, I’d expect him to stay with us.”
