A popular Christmas fair will not go ahead this year after its organising committee dropped to just three people.
Holbeach Christmas Fayre is usually a highlight of the town’s calendar, bringing shoppers to the town to bask in the seasonal good cheer.
But in recent years the committee which organises it has dropped from around eight people to just three and the remaining members have decided to call it a day as it is too much work.
One of them, Lisa Teague said: “I really enjoy organising the fair and doing my bit for the community but it’s quite hard work, there’s a lot to do.
“It’s not that I don’t want to do it but I have a business to run and that has to take priority.
“The fair doesn’t just happen on its own, it needs people who are willing to give their time to make it happen.
“I have been approached by the church with the view to them holding a two-day event on a smaller scale, but I don’t really know much more than that at the moment.
“That could be good as they could get a nice array of stalls in there in the lead up to the Christingle service that will bring people into town.
“At the end of the day, that is what it is all about. It’s beneficial for Holbeach and something for the people of Holbeach to enjoy.
“Hopefully something will happen this year and then perhaps a new committee can be formed to bring Holbeach Christmas Fayre back the year after.
“We just feel that if it’s going to be done it needs to be done properly.”
Lisa has said she will continue to offer any support and advice she can for those looking to organise an event this year, but said it was time for someone else to take the lead.
She said: “I feel as though I have done my bit, but it takes more than just a couple of people to organise something on that scale.”
South Holland district ward councillor Nick Worth said it would be a shame if the fair didn’t go ahead but said he understood the difficulties of organising the event.
He said he would be talking to Holbeach vicar Rosamund Seal about the possibility of the church organising an alternative event.
He added: “It will probably be easier if it is an off-road event that does not require road closures.”
