Hockey round-up: Spalding’s stellar start rolls on with a gr-eight victory

Seven different players scored as Spalding 1st continued their flying start to the new East Men’s Hockey League Premier B season by thrashing Cambridge Nomads 1st 8-1 on Saturday.

Tom Amess, Joe Higgins, Stuart Cunnington, Jacob Baker, Joe Rogers, George Halgarth (2) and Sam Sly all netted at Wilberforce Road Sports Ground as Spalding made it two wins from as many games – and 17 goals scored already.

Next up for them is a home game against Pelicans 1st on Saturday (2pm).

Long Sutton 1st, meanwhile, suffered a 5-1 reverse at St Ives 1st in Division Two North West.

A Josh Baker strike wasn’t enough to stop Sutton falling to their first defeat of the season.

In the same division, Spalding 2nd were also on the receiving end of a 5-1 home against Kettering.

Tim Maltby was Spalding’s sole scorer at Glen Park.

In Division Four North West, Spalding 3rd picked up a decent 2-2 draw at City of Peterborough 6th.

Jason and Harry Naylor got the goals in what was an enjoyable derby showdown at Bretton Gate.

Long Sutton 2nd, meanwhile, went one better and enjoyed a 3-0 win over Bourne Deeping 4th in the same division.

Frazer Watt, Tom Burton and Will White all helped themselves to goals, while Josh Norey was a deserved player of the match on his debut for the side.

In Division Five North West, Long Sutton 3rd were held to a 1-1 home draw by St Neots 3rd.

Player-of-the-match Josh Woodrow grabbed their goal at the Peele Leisure Centre.

Down in Division Six North West, Spalding 4th romped to a 4-0 victory at City of Peterborough 8th.

Cameron Roy (2), Thomas Pilgrim and Brendan Atkin delivered the goods there.

p It was a good day for both Spalding Poachers 1st and Long Sutton ladies’ 1st in East Women’s Hockey League Division Two North West on Saturday.

Sutton were the big winners, handing St Neots 2nd a big 4-0 beating at the Peele.

Two of the goals came from Lisa Baker, while Imogen Cooper and Martha Hoyles also go in on the act.

Spalding, meanwhile, enjoyed a 2-0 triumph over Pelicans 1st.

In what was their first home game of the season, Charlotte Maplethorpe netted both goals for the Poachers.

There was an all-Spalding affair in Division Three North West, with the 2nd side beating the 3rd team 4-1.
