Hockey round-up: Six-goal thriller as Spalding 1st are held, Poachers 1st on-song

Spalding 1st were held to a 3-3 draw by Old Southendian in the East Men’s Hockey League on Saturday.

Goals from Stuart Cunnington, Glenn Richardson and George Halgarth weren’t enough for the Maroons to take maximum points from the Premier B Division encounter at Glen Park.

Down in Division 2N, Long Sutton 1st saw their winning streak ended by a 2-0 home defeat against Harleston Magpies 2nd.

Despite the defeat, Sutton held their own against an excellent Harleston team which contained numerous ex-national league players.

Elsewhere, Spalding 2nd were 4-1 winners over March Town 1st in Division 3NW.

A double from Steve Rogers, plus strikes from Harry Vickers and William Steed, saw them home.

In the same division, Long Sutton 2nd picked up an impressive 5-0 victory over St Ives 2nd.

Dominic Ibrahim, Luke Jackson, Harry Bragington, Josh Fyson and player-of-the-match Jimmy Harrison netted at the Peele Leisure Centre.

Down in Division 4NW, Spalding 3rd were handed a 2-0 defeat by City of Peterborough 5th.

It was a similar story for Spalding 4th in Division 5NW, as they went down to a hefty 3-0 loss at Cambridge South 4th.

Meanwhile, youthful Spalding 5th were held to a 0-0 draw by hosts Alford 2nd at Skegness Grammar School in Division 6NW (N).

In the same division, two goals from George Neale steered Long Sutton 3rd to a 4-2 home win over Leadenham 3rd.

Troy Croxford and Josh Woodrow rounded off the scoring.

  • Two goals from Charlotte Maplethorpe steered Spalding Poachers 1st to a 3-1 win over Cambridge City 4th in East Women’s Hockey League Division Two on Saturday.

Although Poachers fell behind, Maplethorpe levelled before Mia Dewing deflected them ahead. The impressive Maplethorpe then wrapped up the win with another goal at Glen Park.

Long Sutton 1st were beaten 4-1 by Cambridge Uni 3rd in the same division, with Connie Gittins getting the only goal.

In Division 3NW, two AJ Bunyan goals helped earn Spalding Poachers 2nd a 2-2 draw at St Neots 2nd.

Down in Division 4NW (N), Spalding Poachers 3rd beat Bourne Deeping 3rd 3-1 with Amy Naylor, Maisie Foden and Terri Bateman scoring. Sutton 2nd were hammered 13-0 at Wisbech 2nd in the same division.
