Here come the girls! New Holbeach United team to make history

Holbeach United’s first-ever all-girls team is set to make history in the Peterborough Junior Alliance League.

The team, which will play as Holbeach United under-13s, will become the first ever girls’ side to play in what is essentially a boys’ league.

Joint managers Rob Bell and Carl Walker have rapidly assembled a squad of 14 players – which has coincided with the boom in women’s football following the success of England’s “Lionesses” at the World Cup in Canada last month.

When Holbeach moved to their new state-of-the-art Community Sports Academy, dubbed “Kings Academy”, forming an all-girls team was one of their top priorities.

But vice chairman Stuart Clark has been amazed by the interest from South Holland’s girls.

He said: “It was always our vision to form a girls’ team when we moved to the new Academy.

“We had about four interested at the start, but once Rob and Carl stepped up the numbers have gone through the roof.

“We’re very proud to see this team grow and, with women’s football very much on the rise, it’s great we’ve been able to do this.”

Any other girls interested in joining Holbeach’s side can call Rob on 07957 140863 for more details.
