Help us to make the winter warmer

The ending of universal winter payments for pensioners will cause many to worry about the cost of staying warm as this winter kicks in.

Rising energy costs have been a problem for older people on a fixed income, and the £300 winter payment was a real help for those just over the benefits threshold, but by no means wealthy.
So this year we have joined forces with Sarah Phoenix of the Holbeach Heros and Coun Mark Le Sage to launch a new appeal.
Sarah has been taking winter warming donations via the group’s Facebook page, launched during Covid.
Friends and supporters have begun donating blankets and other ‘warm’ items after she was approached for help.
“Our elderly generation are often forgotten among our busy lives; check in on them because they are not around forever.
“The stories and memories they hold are amazing and if it wasn’t for them you wouldn’t be here. So many sacrifices have been made by them that the least you can do is help keep them warm this winter.
“There will be so many alone and worrying how they will cope this winter. Make the time and let’s keep them warm,” she said.
Sarah has already arranged help for people struggling to stay warm or too scared to put the heating on because of the cost.
We are asking our readers to help as well by donating new or nearly new items that can be distributed to those who are in need.
Anything donated to our appeal will be split between the Holbeach Heros and Social Services, and we will continue running it through January when the weather can be at its worst.
Coun Le Sage is helping by collecting donated items and taking them to the right place for distribution.
“Sadly, more than ever the elderly in our area are having to make the choice between heat or eat, so in collaboration with Sarah Phoenix we are appealing for new or really good quality clean undamaged used blankets and new, warm socks, gloves and neckwarmers to support the the vulnerable in our area over the winter period,” he said.
Donations for the appeal can be left at Spalding’s NatWest Bank, Market Place or at Holbeach Hub, Boston Road South, courtesy of the Boxes of Hope charity.
Sarah can also be contacted via the Facebook page for Holbeach Heros.
Winter payments are now only available to people receiving certain benefits, one of which is Pension Credit. Applications close on December 21 this year and Lincolnshire and South Lincolnshire Age Concern can help. Call 03455 564 144 between 9am and 4pm Monday to Friday.
