Hayes reckons Holbeach United are looking the part so far in pre-season

Boss Seb Hayes reckons it’s a case of “so far, so good” for his Holbeach United side over pre-season.

After beating Skegness Town 6-2 on Saturday and thrashing at Wisbech St Mary 8-0 on Tuesday night, the Tigers chief is ready to step things up a notch ahead of the start of the new ChromaSport UCL Premier Division season against Sleaford Town on Saturday week.

Hayes has managed to give all but one of his players plenty of game time, with the one exception – defender Joe Braithwaite – set to get minutes under his belt in the home friendly dates with St Andrews (Saturday, 3pm) and Stamford on (Tuesday, 7.45pm).

Barring any major departures before the new season, Hayes also feels that there is no reason for him to delve back into the transfer market.

“It’s hard to read too much into anything in pre-season,” admitted the Holbeach supremo. “You never know many players teams are missing or if players will move on.

“But I’m very happy with our lads. We’ve worked really hard on their fitness and that already looks to be shining through.

“The fixtures now intensify ahead of the first league game, which was something we always wanted.

“Having five games in two weeks or so should get the lads some match fitness so we hit the ground running against Sleaford.

“I’m very happy with the squad we have. The new guys have bedded in really well and it has been great to see the strikers (Lewis Leckie and Will Bird) find their scoring touch in pre-season.

“All of them are registered and I’m not expecting anybody to leave, meaning we’ll not look to add any more signings.

“Even if we lost one or two, I’d probably look to promote from within the club – that is our ethos now.

“Obviously, if we lost a key player we’d consider a new signing, but there’s no reason for us to think that’ll happen right now.”

Holbeach will have almost a full squad to pick from in the Carter’s Park games against St Andrews and Stamford, with only midfielder Dan Dougill unavailable.
