Harold to DUKW into supermarkets to raise money for D-Day commemoration

A veterans supporter is taking his army machine to local supermarkets over the next few weeks to raise money to help mark the 80th anniversary of D-Day.

Harold Payne will be at Tesco in Holbeach tomorrow and Saturday (April 5 and 6) and then at Morrison’s in Pinchbeck on Friday and Saturday May 9 and 10 collecting alongside his DUKW landing craft.

He is looking to raise money to purchase 500,000 poppy petals, which he plans to scatter in the sea off the Normandy coast on June 6.

Harold’s DUKW was one of the actual vehicles used to land the troops on the beaches 80 years ago.

Harold intends to take the DUKW back to Normandy one last time this year to honour the service personnel who lost their lives for freedom.

“It’s about remembering the 16,500 from Lincolnshire who didn’t come back,” Harold said. “Every child will be given petals to put on a war memorial.”
