HARBOROUGH TOWN 0
HOLBEACH UNITED 2
Will Bird’s double made it a super six wins on the spin for Holbeach United as they handed ChromaSport UCL Premier Division rivals Harborough Town a 2-0 home reverse.
Frontman Bird gave the Tigers a half-time lead at Bowden’s Park with a strike on 25 minutes, before rounding off the win with his ninth goal of the season 18 minutes from time.
With Matt Warfield, Nick Jackson and Joe Smith all missing, it was another strong showing from a side that is looking capable of at least mounting a challenge for a top five finish.
It’s now six wins and a draw from just eight league games for Seb Hayes’ side this season. Currently eighth in the table, they have at least two games in hand on every side above them – and would move up to third if they took maximum points from them.
A happy Hayes said: “I felt that we were good value for the win – in truth we should have been further ahead at half time.
“4-0 would have been about right as Will Bird, Lewis Leckie and George Zuerner all missed great chances.
“However, at 1-0 you’re always worried that they could come out in the second half and turn the game on its head.
“Thankfully, that didn’t really happen – they only really threw caution to the wind once we went 2-0 up.
“We nullified them nicely and I was happy with how we played. We went direct when we needed to and also defended nicely, even without Nick Jackson and Matt Warfield.
“It was a very solid showing and it’s obviously pleasing to make it six wins on the spin.
“We’re doing well, although it was a bit disheartening to win the game and drop a place in the table! That’s football.
“We’re one of the chasing pack at this stage and all we can do is keep on winning and see where it takes us.”
