By South Holland District Council waste and recycling officer Laura Simpkins
It has been a busy few weeks for the waste and recycling team, who have been out and about in the community, and further afield, to talk to residents and learn more about how we can improve our recycling service.
On September 16 I was at Spalding market talking to residents about waste and recycling and giving away a few freebies.
These events are great opportunities to answer questions and help our residents recycle more.
A common question which was asked was about whether pet food pouches could be recycled.
Unfortunately, as these are made out of more than one material, these can’t be recycled.
Another concern was regarding whether we can recycle plastic carriers in the green bags, which I can confirm we can.
We will be out and about on Friday at the Spalding Pumpkin Parade market during the afternoon so please visit us with any questions.
As well as the market, I have been out visiting Green Bag Lottery winners across the district and congratulating Maria Silva on bagging the £1,000 cash prize.
I also got the opportunity to visit the RWM – a waste and recycling exhibition which helps share best practice across local authorities and private companies. I had the opportunity to listen to a speech by Eric Pickles and gather tips on how we can improve our recycling service in the district.
Over the next few weeks I will be a taking part in a zero waste challenge. This is all part of the zero waste economy. This doesn’t necessarily mean that no waste is created. It just encourages people to fully value resources, environmentally and economically.
In my next article you will find out how I’m getting on and read facts of how to reduce your waste in your own home.
