Spalding Grammar School’s year eight athletics squad continued their successful season with another dominant performance at the South Lincolnshire School Athletics Championship at the Princess Royal Athletics Arena in Boston.
The team won 12 of their 13 events and came second in the other – smashing four Championship records (CR) in the process.
William Hughes completed the sprint double in the 100m and 200m, as well as adding the high jump title to his name. His time of 25.3secs in the 200m was a fine CR.
Charles Hughes also completed a throwing double – winning the discus and javelin events, with the later (33.25m) another CR.
Keilin Spurdens and Harry Burchnall put in dominant performances in the 1,500m and 800m respectively, whilst there were also victories for Patrick Harrington (shot), Alex Richardson (300m), Cameron Cladd (long jump) and Fenn Storey (triple jump).
Spurdens’ 4.52mins effort was the third CR, with the final one coming in the 4×100 relay (50.30secs) to add the finishing touches to a top show.
Elsewhere, the year seven squad came third behind Boston Grammar School and Bourne Grammar School.
There were stand-out performances from both Jack Roffe and Will Wand, however. Roffe produced a mammoth throw of 9.56m in the shot to win by two metres, while Wand won the discus with a throw of 21.37m.
The team show enough to suggest that it has the potential to be successful next year.
The year nine team were only five points behind the winners Boston Grammar as Jack Baker and Kieran Hamilton continued their fantastic seasons with dominant performance in the sprints.
Baker, who only just missed out during the Lincolnshire Athletics trials due to injury, won both the 100m (12.5secs) and the 300m (39.8secs), while Hamilton was victorious in the 200m in a time of 25.3secs.
The year ten team had a similar story, as they lost out to Bourne Grammar by just five points.
One of the highlights saw Callum Crosby complete the sprint double in the 100m (11.8secs) and 200m (24.3secs).
Anthony Roofe then produced a jump of 10.98m to win the triple jump.
Spalding Grammar’s athletics coaches Mr Crane and Mr Hedges said: “This has been a really successful season for athletics which has not quite finished yet.”
