Good start to planning Spalding town centre’s best-ever Christmas events

It might only be March but several minds are already focussed on Christmas plans for Spalding town centre.

It comes after last year’s festive activities – particularly the Sunday Christmas Market – were widely panned as lifeless, poorly organised and a waste of the £2,600 budget.

The organiser then was Spalding and District Area Chamber of Commerce, which was given cash from the Springfields S106 pot by Spalding Town Centre Management Board.

South Holland District Council was not involved but now some Spalding members have teamed up with council officers, businesses and market traders to ensure better events in 2017.

The group, which met for the first time on Tuesday (March 7) is headed up by Coun Jack McLean, who said: “The meeting was a great success and has already helped cement some early plans for celebrations later this year.
“The ambition to source some sponsorships and help fund the events have led to some very positive ideas and opportunities. Over the coming weeks members of the group will be approaching local organisations about our desired enhancements.

“Crucially, everyone approached the meeting with an open mind and a willingness to contribute.
“Planning has begun informally with newly coinciding dates that will be beneficial for visitors and traders. Commitments such as those made in Tuesday’s meeting will help to offer more in return for supporting the festivities as well as increasing footfall.
“We hope to make it the best year yet and, after being met with such enthusiasm, I am more than confident it will be.

“Anyone interested in helping to sponsor the Christmas events can contact me on 07761 098517.”

Others in attendance: district councillors David Ashby, Christine Lawton, Roger Gambba-Jones; Nigel Burch (SHDC economic development); Mike Knight (SHDC markets); market traders David and Tracey Burgess and Julie Newman; Sue Stubley (Occasions Jewellers); Jan Whitbourn (Tulip Events).
