Good away draws for Spalding United and Holbeach United

South Holland duo Spalding United and Holbeach United earned 1-1 draws in tricky away games at Chasetown and AFC Rushden and Diamonds respectively on Saturday.

In Evo-Stik League First Division South, Spalding had to come from a goal down to keep their unbeaten run going against a side that beat them 2-0 in the reverse fixture.

Lee Butler gave the hosts half-time lead with an effort direct from a free kick, but Andrew Tidswell’s header early in the second period secured a share of the spoils for the Tulips.

The draw – only their second of the season – leaves Pat Rayment’s side in seventh place.

Meanwhile, Holbeach picked up a great point against title rivals Diamonds having also been forced to come from behind.

Defender Liam Dolman fired table-topping Diamonds into the lead inside ten minutes, but Lee Beeson restored parity a minute before the break.

The winger won and took a penalty, but saw his spot-kick saved before burying the rebound.

Both sides had their chances in the second half in a game that ended under controversial circumstances as the teams clashed just before the final whistle.

With Yaxley beating Wellingborough Town 2-0, Diamonds, Holbeach and The Cuckoos are now locked together on 31 points at the top.
