Golf round-up: Spalding’s top men’s team remain flawless

Spalding Golf Club’s top men’s team continued their 100 per cent start to the new South Lincolnshire Scratch League season with a home victory over Greetham Valley.

They secured a 4.5-1.5 victory at the Surfleet course, with only one of their six pairs losing on the day in the Division One clash.

Winning on the day were James Crampton and Trevor Laud (5&4), Richard McCrae and Dave Whisker (3&1), Charles Lacey and Matt Richardson (3&1) and Emile Van De Merwe and Wayne Wallace (2&1).

Keith Hearne and Ant Murphy also picked up half, while Hugo Kedzlie and Miles Foden were the duo to lose by a 2&1 scoreline.

However, Spalding’s 2nd team suffered a 4-2 defeat away at league leaders Blankney in their latest fixture.

Their wins came from Steve Camm and Simon Rothwell (4&3) and Dave Perrott and Darren Ford (2&1).

But Neil Wilkinson and Mick Bates (5&4), Simon Horton and Jim Robertson (3&2), Mark Craig and Luke Chilvers lost (2 down) and Andy Green and Paul Johnson (2&1) were all beaten.

  • Spalding’s men enjoyed a fine 3-0 victory at Sleaford to make further progress in The Bramley Cup.

Wins from James Crampton (3&2), Hugo Kedzlie (1up) and Simon Richardson (7&6) secured the victory in the county singles competition, which is played off scratch.

The victory sets up another tough draw away at Kenwick Park.

  • The latest scramble competition attracted 116 entrants which was again won by the Camm family and Mick Bell.

Steve Camm, wife Amanda, daughter Ellie and Bell were first with a score of 53.8.

Second place went to Spencer Gooderson and his son Louie, who partnered with Andy Atkins and Darren Ford to score 54.15.

The team of Chris and Elaine Hancock and Keith and Lesley Williams (56.2) were third, with Doug and Tilly Garfoot, Simon Richardson and Jackie Bailey-Scott fourth.

  • Ladies’ section: Spalding performed well at the recent Lincolnshire Veteran Ladies’ Golf Association spring meeting at South Kyme.

This better ball Stableford competition was played for the Chaplin Trophy – and one Spalding player got her hands on the trophy.

The winners were Ingrid King (Spalding) and Chris Leggett (South Kyme) were the winners on 47 points, while Spalding duo Lainy Macleman and Chris Vickers took second on 43 points.

Also scoring well to claim fifth place were Spalding’s Sue Matthews and Olive Gooderson (41 points) and Elizabeth Holbrook and Jean White (also on 41 points) in sixth.

Several other Spalding ladies were close behind.

  • Some 14 pairs of ladies played in the Australian Spoons competition – a foursomes Stableford open to those players with handicaps between 15 and 40.

The winners, on countback, were Sue Dewar and Elizabeth Holbrook on 31 points after a four-way tie.

The teams of Barbara Newcombe and Lesley Williams, Chris Vickers and Jacquie Walton and Katharine Carthy and Sally West were second, third and fourth respectively after they also managed 31 points.

Tydd St Giles Golf Club

Tim Hines was the Division One winner in Tydd St Giles Golf Club’s May Medal after shooting a 66.

Paul Brown and David Pluck were the other divisional winners.
