Golf round-up: Simon sees off big field to clinch Spalding Golf Club’s Burton Cup

Simon Ward’s score of 41 was enough to clinch first place in Spalding Cup’s Burton Cup qualifier with a score of 41 points.

The 18-handicapper topped a field of 130 members at the Surfleet course, with Andrew Green (23 handicap) a point back in second.

Luke Chilvers (13) was a further point back in third, while David Perrott (7) and Brendan D’Abreo (23) were fourth and fifth respectively on 38 points.

  • A large field of 91 players contested the senior section’s May Medal, which was played on a fine day for golf.

Martin Chandler’s score of 70 was enough to top the Division Two standings and earned him the overall crown.

Ray Barnett (74) was the Division One winner after edging out Peter Clare on countback.

Rod Filby, who was second in Division Two, also shot a 74. 

Results: Division One: 1st Ray Barnett 74; 2nd Peter Clare 74; 3rd Wayne Wallace 75; 4th Steve Monaghan 75.

Division Two: 1st Martin Chandler 70 (overall winner); 2nd Rod Filby 74; 3rd Brendan D’Abreo 75; 4th Mike Murphy 76.

  • Spalding’s senior team battled out a 4-4 draw at home to rivals Woodhall Spa in their most recent fixture.

Results: Peter Bridge and Shaun Gibson lost 1 down, Rod Hunt and David Brotherton lost 2&1, Howard Greaves and Dennis Farnsworth won 3&1, Jim Dobson and John Keeton won by 7&5,

Dave Halfteck and John Walker won 4&3, Mike Gould and Bernard Herbert lost 4&2, Ron Rolfe and Peter Sanders lost by 7&6, Alan Pritchard and John Dorward won 2&1.

  • Spalding’s third team enjoyed a 4.5-1.5 victory over Louth at the Surfleet course.

The winning pairs were Andy Thomas and Roy Portass, Richard Baker and Keith Cross, Andy Green and Keith Moore, Andy Cunnington and Louie Gooderson, while Greg Wright and Pete Spencer halved.

  • Before that win, Spalding’s third side suffered a sound 4-2 beating at Sleaford 3rd.

The winning pairs for Spalding were Keith Moore and John Sharrocks and Tony Prince and Martin Broderick, while Steward Barnett and Roy Portass halved.

Tydd St Giles Golf Club

Deadly duo Mark Boughem and Keith Crowson produced an impressive showing to win the Stableford Pairs title at Tydd St Giles Golf Club.

Boughem and Crowson racked up a tidy total of 44 points to finish some five points clear of their nearest rivals in the competition.

Second place (on 39 points) went to Peter Brazil and Paul Tibbs, while Zack Chapman and William Luckett were a point further back in third.

They edged out the combination of Mick Tiller and Derek Beba into fourth place on countback after both bagged scores of 38 points.
