Golf round-up: Sensational turnout as 16 different clubs visit Spalding event

The Captain’s Open AM/AM event at Spalding Golf Club attracted 84 players – with an impressive 16 different clubs joining members from the host team in competition.

That ensured that 84 players took to the Surfleet course last Thursday, coming from Sickleholme GC, Bondhay Golf and Country Club, Rutland Water GC, Peterborough Milton GC, Boston GC, Rutland County GC, Tydd St Giles GC, Swaffham GC, Lincoln GC, King’s Lynn GC, Scraptoft GC, Kenwick Park GC, Thorpe Wood GC, Seacroft GC, Royal Norwich GC and Elton Furze.

The clear winners on the day, with a dominant 85-point haul, were the quartet of Oliver, Mark and Barry Tyler (Thorpe Wood) and Graham Metclafe-Hume (Royal Norwich).

Richard Walker (Kenwick Park), Tony Allwood, Alan Edwards and Mick Neal (all Sandilands) were second on 81 points, with the all-Bondhay team of Nigel Prestwood, Graham Fell, John Stokes and Shane Turner third on 80 points.

Scraptoft foursome David Bell, Brian Drew, Stuart Gutteridge and John White were edged into fourth on countback after also scoring 80 points.

  • Spalding seniors visited Stoke Rochford Golf Club last Wednesday.

Unfortunately for them, the home team took full advantage of their local knowledge – particularly around the greens – which resulted in a 6-2 loss for visitors.

Winners for Spalding were Neil Wilkinson and Keith Brown, while the teams of Shaun Gibson and Mike Browning and Roger Brown and Mark Craig halved their matches.

  • Friday saw an Exchange Day with Sherwood Forest Golf Club – meaning 48 players from Spalding travelled to Mansfield for a round at the request of the home club.

The winners on the day were Bob Armstrong, Mark Craig and Rick Edwards all with 88 points.
