Golf round-up: Dan’s the man to lift Spalding Golf Club’s coveted Burton Cup

Daniel Mayfield saw off 127 other players and challenging conditions to win Spalding Golf Club’s Burton Cup last Saturday.

The 11-handicapper scored 40 Stableford points to secure top spot by one point at the Surfleet course ahead of Geoff Moyses (14 handicap) on 39.

Steve Worboys (23) and Nick Holmes (9) were third and fourth respectively after both scored 38 points, with Simon Horton (8) and David Perrott (6) completing the top six on 37 points.

  • Some 99 seniors played the Seniors Medal last Tuesday. Split into two divisions (Division One handicaps 0-19, Division Two handicaps 20-54), the divisional winners were Geoff Dewhurst and Mike Murphy.

Results: Division One: 1st Geoff Dewhurst (16) 74; 2nd Albert Jacobs (12) 75; 3rd Ray Harrison (16) 75; 4th Wayne Wallace (5) 75; 5th Jim Dobson (10) 75. Division Two: 1st Mike Murphy (22) 71; 2nd Peter Schofield (28) 72; 3rd Trevor Chinery (23) 72; 4th Tony White (26) 74; 5th Bill Prosser (20) 74.

  • Spalding’s senior side beat their counterparts from Sutton Bridge 6.5-1.5 in a friendly clash at the Surfleet course. Outstanding performances were put in by Jim Dobson and Bill Creasey (won 7&6), Steve Kerton and Trevor Chinery (won 6&5) and Alec Hone and Gary King (won 6&4), while captain Peter Jullien sank a birdie putt on the 16th hole to win the match for he and his partner Chris Harwin (4&2).

Ladies’ section: Results: President’s Cup (bogey competition) – 1st Chris Vickers -2; 2nd Paula Brown -3 (ocb); 3rd Dina Reedman -3.

League fixture: Spalding 2 Lincoln Torksey 2 (Pat West & Elaine Hancock won 4&3, Maria Williamson & Elizabeth Holbrook lost 2&1, Nicky Weller & Paula Brown won 1up, Gill Dewhurst and Anita Cross lost 3&2).

HOME VICTORY: Tydd St Giles Golf Club’s Steve Duffy was the overall winner of the 2019 Spring Open with a score of 45 points amid wet conditions.

The 2019 Spring Open at Tydd St Giles saw 128 golfers from around the region take part in an individual Stableford competition.

On a very showery, but warm day some very good scores came in. The best of the bunch was Tydd golfer Steve Duffy, who was the overall winner with 45 points.

An impressive £376 was raised from the raffle for the chosen charity of captain Giles Stearne; The Ferry Project supporting homeless people in Wisbech.
