Golds galore for Nene Valley Harriers athletes at Cambridgeshire championships

Athletes from Nene Valley Harriers enjoyed a gold-rush in the 2017 Cambridgeshire track and field county championships at Peterborough’s embankment track.

Despite splitting their athletes between the Cambridgeshire and Lincolnshire championships, the medal podium seemed to be permanently occupied by the red, white and blue Nene Valley vests.

The Harriers picked up 14 gold medals along with plenty of silvers and bronzes, with the winners coming from across the age groups.

Under-13 middle distance ace Lottie Hemmings grabbed gold in the 1,500m, while Freddie House won 200m gold in the same age group with a 30.31secs clocking.

At the other end of the scale, veteran thrower Simon Achurch won gold in the senior men’s hammer as well as picking up silver in the shot along with discus bronze.

Nene Valley reigned supreme in the throws, with Martin Tinkler winning senior men’s shot gold with a putt of 14.89m and in the discus with a throw of 40.29m.

Lydia Church won under-20 shot and discus gold, along with hammer silver while Kai Harrison took under-17 shot putt gold and was second in the discus.

Kai’s younger brother George won under-15 javelin silver too, while Callum Robertson also claimed under-17 shot silver.

On the track, Dave Brown won gold in the men’s 400m in 51.08secs, then also took silver in the 200m.

Georgie Ivens won the senior ladies’ 200m and Kelsi Ellis was first over the line in the under-17’s 300m.

GOLD: Rosie Fresen.

There were 100m silvers for senior lady Gemma Scales, under-20 Alexandra Pullen – who doubled up with 200m bronze – and Charley Woodworth at under-13 level.

Charlie Molyneaux also finished third in the under-13s 100m.

Elsewhere, Ella Robinson was first over the line in the under-15 800m with a time of 2.28.32mins and Emma Randall won gold in the senior ladies’ 1,500m in 4.55.39mins.

There was also 300m bronze for Dylan Tomaselli, Katie Porter and Benjamin Mace, who also won 800m bronze, while Olivia Mead was the under-15 800m bronze medallist.

Also collecting medals were the under-17 1,500m duo of Josie Fortune and Ellie Piccaver, who finished second and third respectively.

All that glittered was gold for Rosie Fresen in the under-20 triple jump and there were silvers for long jumper Josie Downer and high jumper Tomi Ogunyoye.

The other medal winner was Harry Smith, who picked up under-17 triple jump bronze.

  • Nene Valley’s Laura Grimer was the first local lady across the line in the Eye 10k, coming home seventh in 43.45mins.

Ben Heron (Peterborough AC) withstood gale force Fenland winds as he strode to victory in the men’s race, clocking 34.35mins.

The women’s race was won by Chloe Finlay, an RAF Leading Aircraftsman based at Brize Norton, in a time of 41.09mins.
