GALLERY – Monks House top the table in advanced schools’ hockey

Spalding Hockey Club hosted the finals of the Spalding primary schools hockey tournaments at Glen Park, Surfleet, in glorious sunshine on Friday.

There has been a great deal of interest from the schools over the five tournaments held in this school year, and 19 teams from 12 local primary schools participated on Friday.

As usual, the teams were split into four graded league at advanced, intermediate and two beginner leagues.

The two clear favourites in this league were Boston-based Tower Road A and Spalding’s Monks House.

Monks House started off at a cracking pace and recorded 6-0 wins in both their opening games against Gosberton Academy A and John Harrox A.

Tower Road A also had two wins (2-0 and 3-0) over the same teams, and so it was set up for winner-takes-all in the last game of the day.

Monks House came out strongly and were 2-0 up at the break.

They added a further two goals in a strong second half display to take the advanced league title with Tower Road A taking the runner up slot.

Tower Road B team went one better by dominating the intermediate league winning all four of their games.

They recorded 2-0 wins over Eye Primary, St John’s and Spalding Parish in their opening games but were made to work really hard by their Boston neighbours St Thomas’s A in the final game.

St Thomas’s has also recorded three wins so it was all to play for with Tower Road B just winning 2-1 for the trophy.

Tower Road demonstrated their strength in depth when their C team took the honours in the beginner A league.

Like their B team, they won all four matches beating John Harrox B and St Thomas’s B (both 2-0) Gosberton Risegate (3-1) and St Norbert’s A (3-0) to take the top spot.
Gosberton Risegate performed well with three wins over St Norbert’s A (1-0), John Harrox B (3-0) and St Thomas’s B (2-0) to finish in second place.

St Norbert’s B started strongly in the beginner B league winning their opening two games against locals Surfleet Primary ((1-0) and Tower Road D (2-0) but had to settle for draws with Gosberton Academy B (1-1) and Pinchbeck East (0-0) in their closing games.

However, this was enough to secure the top position.

The trophies were presented to the four league winners by special guest for the day George Morris.

Morris started his hockey career with Spalding Hockey Club juniors at the age of four and played for St Norbert’s in three primary school tournaments.

He went on to play for Spalding HC seniors making his first team debut when 14.

After a season with City of Peterborough in the English national league, Morris moved on to Repton School and Club helping the side to further national league promotion.

Morris made his international debut in February, playing for England under 18s against Ireland and continues to train regularly with the national squad.
