History came to life last weekend as Crowland was laid siege to once again.
The usually biennial recreation of the 1643 siege of Crowland Abbey as part of the Civil War returned this year after a slightly extended break.
And it saw around 100 enactors from around the country descend on the town.
One enactor even used the occasion to ask his partner if she’d marry him.
Rev Mike Ongyerth said: “It was a huge success, the best one ever.
“The fireworks were awesome and the torch-lit parade incredible with a very large crowd out to view.
“We even had a proposal of marriage on the field between two re-enactors 17c style.
“There was 40kg of gunpowder used by four cannon and the musketeers
“I have no idea how much food and beer provided by (Ye Olde Abbey Hotel and Firmin Estate Agents) was consumed but it was a lot.”
Paul Przyszlak added: “Lots of people came out to experience it and there was a local element as the Spalding Parliamentarians laid siege to the abbey held by Royalists.
“The re-enactors were absolutely brilliant and it was great that they were able to get the event on after last year’s was cancelled following the Queen’s death.
“Plans are now being drawn up for the event to return in 2025.”
