Fun to be had at summer table tennis sessions

V SPORT

The Spalding and District Table Tennis League has now switched to summer mode – and anybody interested in taking up the sport is being urged to give it a try.

There are up to nine tables available at the Castle Sports Complex every Wednesday night for those members or visitors who wish to practice or just have a sociable evening with some exercise thrown in.

The first week saw between 15 and 20 members and visitors came to the sports centre. They only used half the tables, so there is still plenty of room for others to get involved.

All visitors were welcomed and joined in, receiving tips on techniques from holding the bat to playing different types of shots. The league’s two registered coaches were on hand, as well as regular members giving advice and the robot was also there for practice.

The league’s committee is already looking forward to the end of the summer and are hoping that some of the visitors might be interested enough to join next season.

Currently, the league cautiously estimate that they will have 16 teams over the two divisions next season. Last time around, they had players of all abilities from comparative beginners to those with experience of national and international events.

Player ages range from 11 to 70 and above – and all are committed to helping anyone who is willing to listen.

The league’s Allan Lewis said: “Why not come along and join us on a Wednesday from 7.30pm?

“You might even find yourself picking up a trophy next season as we have a healthy record of newcomers winning prizes.”
