A new five-week long walking festival has its launch event at a free family fun day at Willow Tree Fen Nature Reserve on Saturday (September 26).
South Lincolnshire Walking Festival gets under way on Friday (September 25) and runs until Saturday, October 31. It will feature 76 free guided walks in South Holland, North and South Kesteven, and Boston.
Heritage Lincolnshire and Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust are inviting walkers and their families to celebrate the launch of the festival at Willow Tree Fen Nature Reserve (just off Counter Drain Drove, between Pode Hole and Tongue End) .
Heritage Lincolnshire’s cultural events officer Beverley Gormley said: “The South Lincolnshire Walking Festival’s launch event is going to be a great day out for all the family!
“There’ll be guided walks around the nature reserve along with bat detecting, owl pellet dissection, pond dipping, den building, badge making and craft activities.
“Willow Tree Fen is a wonderful place for us to launch the Walking Festival, giving families the opportunity to have fun and go on short walks with Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust’s experts.”
The walks in the festival, which has been made possible by funding from the Big Lottery Fund and Lincolnshire County Council, will be led by organisations such as the Ramblers, Walking for Health, Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust, Woodland Trust, RSPB and the Society for Lincolnshire History and Archaeology.
There are various walk lengths and difficulty levels, all of which are detailed in the programme that can be downloaded here or picked up at a Tourist Information Centre. The walks will take place on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays so that those who work or want to involve the family don’t miss out.
