Friendly win comes at an expensive price

A strong second-half recovery saw Spalding United chalk up an impressive 3-1 win at National League North new boys Worksop Town on Saturday.

After conceding a second-half goal to the hosts, the Tulips hit back with goals from new signing Yusifu Ceesay, James Clifton and Bart Cybulski to turn it round.

Victory came at a cost though, with influential full-back Nathan Fox ending up in hospital with a knee injury.

Manager Jimmy Dean said the injury looked serious but had come with no-one around him.

Dean was pleased with the way his players responded to the early loss of Fox and said: “It was a good performance. We used the ball really well and were really sharp and are going in the right direction.

“We’re a little bit behind other teams in our preparation and had two or three players missing.”

The Southern League season starts with a trip to newly promoted Real Bedford on August 9 and Dean added: “It won’t be easy with the first few games of the season being away but we just need to make sure we keep progressing nicely.”

An early goal from Jack Roberts was enough to secure a 1-0 win at Corby Town on Tuesday. Spalding were on top for most of the match and had the majority of the play and chances but could only score the one goal.

The Tulips complete their pre-season matches on Saturday with a trip to big-spending full-time National League North side King’s Lynn Town.
