Freak storm floods Spalding roads and car parks

Spalding was hit by an extraordinary storm on Saturday afternoon (June 25), leaving areas covered in hailstones and roads and car parks flooded.

In a soggy June, just nine days earlier a storm had produced similar results with town centre businesses and roads badly affected.

Last weekend’s downpour was very localised – just a few miles out of Spalding there was little more than a shower.

Mum-of-two Gemma Robinson, of West Pinchbeck, was astonished by the ferocity of the deluge experienced at Holland Market.
She said: “I’ve never seen rain like it. It started with a hail storm, then just got heavier and heavier.
“I was in Sainsbury’s and everyone was expecting it to stop as they were waiting to leave, but it just carried on.
“I got to my car and the car park was flooded.”

Videos emerged of vehicles trawling through flooded nearby roads with no distinction between the highway and pavement.

Surprisingly, the storm led to few calls for assistance. Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue had a couple of shouts in the Spalding and Sleaford area and South Holland District Council received just one related call.
