Five-star Philpott goes on a victory spree at EBA finals as hatful of triumphs

Royal Mail Cart bowls ace Jordan Philpott has capped an extremely successful season by secured five county titles for 2022 – qualifying to the national finals at Leamington Spa in all of those events.

This followed the European Championships in Scotland, where Philpott helped England to a team gold medal despite narrowly losing out in the bronze medal match in the singles and triples.

Moorland Railway Bowls Club in Lincoln hosted the EBA county finals on Sunday but, as the Royal Mail Cart ace was in so many finals, he played two finals before the day got underway.

As defending county and national under-25 singles champion, Philpott successfully defended his county title by beating James Hebden (Blackstones) 21-5, Harry Mycock (Royal Mail Cart) 21-11 and James Cherry (Castle) in the final 21-16.

He also teamed up with Mycock in the under-25 pairs as they beat Daniel Stanley (Carr Lane) and Kylo Cranidge (Blossom Way) in the final, which was won on an extra end, 16-15.

On Sunday, Jordan was firstly joined by Simon Lilley and Graham Smith in the triples final against Ian Johnson, Mathew Orrey and Dion Auckland (Grantham).

In a three-hour epic, the match was decided on an extra end, when Philpott had the last bowl of the match and played a perfect two-bowl take out to remove both of their closest bowls and win the match for his side.

Philpott then took his form into the county singles final where he played Ollie Gedney (Burton House).

Despite being 11-15 down, he did not panic and scored ten shots without reply to win the match 21-15.

The victory was Philpott’s first singles title and ensured it stayed at Royal Mail Cart after Martin Spencer won the title in 2021.

The last final of the day was the county pairs, where Philpott was again partnered with Lilley against Neil Poole and Paul Grimbleby from Shires.

The Royal Mail Cart duo showed their class from the outset and ran out comfortable 28-5 winners to clinch the county pairs title back-to-back.
