Five-goal blast keeps Tigers in play-off hunt

It looks like it is a four-way fight to secure the last play-off spot for promotion from Division One North of the Thurlow Nunn League.

Haverhill Rovers appear to have got the single automatic promotion place sewn up, holding a 16-point lead, while Stanway Pegasus, Framlingham Town and Harwich & Parkeston are clear of the pack in the first three play-off berths.

That leaves Holbeach United battling alongside Diss Town, FC Peterborough and Gorleston Reserves aiming to extend their season with the hope of a place in next season’s Premier Division line-up.

However, whether they go up or not, current forecasts are that the Tigers will be heading back to the United Counties League due to the vagaries of the geographical make-up of the clubs in the region.

Holbeach stayed in the hunt for a step up with a stunning 5-1 victory at FC Parson Drove on Saturday.

A mazy run from Pat Kacirek brought the opening goal after nine minutes and 10 minutes later a flurry of corners delivered by Sam Carter eventually resulted in Jordan Oldham powerfully heading into the net.
Callum Wright then flicked the ball on for Kyle Compton to chip in the third after 26 minutes and it was 4-0 at the break when Ryan Cook finished off an excellent move with a 42nd-minute strike.

Goalkeeper Josh Simpson had a busier time in the second half, pulling off a couple of great stops, but he was beaten in the 83rd minute for a consolation goal from the hosts.

However, the Tigers had already completed a nap-hand four minutes earlier when Jordan Keeble picked himself up from a foul to fire in the resultant penalty.

Tigers: Simpson, Greenacre, Oldham, Roberts, Ling, Carter (Ibeneme), Kacirek, Thorne, Wright, Compton, Cook. Subs: Alan, Lee, Keeble.
Attendance: 50.
