Five alive James inspires super Spalding Water Polo success

Spalding Water Polo moved up to third in the Herts League with a fine 13-7 win over Bedford at the Castle Sports Complex.

Spalding took control of the match from the whistle and their attacking style meant a lead of 4-1 at the end of the first quarter, with goals from John James, James Teesdale, Jack Carpenter and Tim Shields.

The second quarter was another dominant display from the hosts, with goals from James (2), Gareth Lord and Oli Favell to make it 8-3 in their favour. Bedford played better in the third quarter, scoring twice to Spalding’s once, courtesy of captain Ben Marsters.

However, the in-form James scored twice in the final quarter to ensure there would be no fightback – and with more goals coming from Carpenter and Lord, Spalding sealed victory.

Scorers: James (5), Carpenter (2), Lord (2), Favell, Marsters, Shields and Teesdale.

  • Spalding finished third in the Hitchin tournament on 11 July, played in their outdoor pool. They had mixed fortunes in the group stage, beating Dunstable 6-2, with goals from Carpenter (2), and one apiece from Lord, Marsters, Rogers and Shield.

They did, however, lose 3-1 to Hatfield 3-1 (goal from Martin) to end their chance of appearing in the final.

In the 3rd/4th play-off, they convincingly beat Dunstable 9-0 thanks to Martin (3), Carpenter (2), Lord (2), Ben Marsters and Tom Marsters.
