Fishing for rare carp approval

Plans for a new fishery with ‘high end’ camping lodges have been submitted for a site in Pinchbeck.

Church View Fishery will also utilise off-grid camping and a document accompanying the application says it will offer breeding sales of the rare breed Crucian Carp.

“We have identified a requirement/need locally to enhance the area with a combination of services within one site,” says the design and access statement.

The business will also offer camping in tents or bivvy bags, but there will be lakeside lodges available for ‘glamping.’

The application has been submitted for Kevin Whincup and Dr Kate Tether, who own the 4.2-acre site.

They have already removed more than 13 tonnes of rubbish from the area and the lake has been excavated to remove ‘hundreds of years of silt and detritus and return it to its former glory.’

The lake has been fitted with an aerator and a dam constructed to protect woods from seasonal flooding.

More than 300 UK native trees and 250 shrubs have been planted to supplement a woodland area which dates back to the 11th century.

The site also has a borehole to help with watering and feeding the lake during the summer months.

“Crucian Carp are a shy fish and are native to the UK, but faced extinction in the 1970s and ’80s due to a disease specific to the breed.

“Very few fisheries in the UK have genuine UK native stock available for anglers to fish for.

“Our aim is to reintroduce the breed for the enjoyment of anglers, but also to sell on the fish to other UK fisheries who wish to help with the Crucian Carp Preservation Project, recognised and supported by the Environment Agency.”

The site will have strict noise rules, with no music or loud sounds and will have entrance and departure times to ensure peace and tranquillity.

“While our main aim is to attract anglers and campers on a self-catering basis, the range of local facilities supporting eating out at our fine local pub, The Ship Inn, or an array of other outlets are within walking distance of the site.”

There will be a small lodge for on-site living and security and the lake has already been stocked with tench and Crucian Carp.

A further lodge would be added which could also be used as a tutoring room and both structures would not be permanent and have a low impact on the site, says the application.

The application will be decided by South Holland District Council.
