Firsts and seconds’ clash is a real family affair

There was no love lost in a family affair in Division Two North West of the Women’s East League.
Spalding’s top two teams met in a clash that saw three sets of mothers and daughters up against each other – Stephanie and Sophie Wilson, Zoe and Honor Moore and Sam and Evie Maltby.
It was the first team members who were celebrating after an emphatic ‘away’ win.
With the Seconds in their home strip of maroon, it was the whites of the first team who dazzled after scoring in the second minute when Georgina Maplethorpe got a touch on Laura Graves’ goal-bound effort.
Five minutes later Honor Moore opened her account to make it 2-0. The goals flowed as Graves got her name on the scoresheet with two quick goals to build a 4-0 lead. Some good possession followed for the home team and they earned a penalty corner. However, hopes of getting a goal back went awry and the opportunity passed.
Despite some sterling tackles by Sam Maltby and fine saves by Eliza Morris in the maroons’ goal, two more goals followed with Moore slipping in her second before a diving Kelly Cooper got in on the act to make it 6-0 at the break.
The second half followed a similar pattern but this time it was Sophie Wilson who powered home the opener. Karen Timby then found herself in an advanced position to add her name to the scorers’ list to make it 8-0.
Still the Seconds worked hard but the continued efforts of Lyn Sullivan and Erin McMurray in the forward line went unrewarded.
Maplethorpe was determined not to miss out and added two quick goals to bring up double figures. Camille Rogers was seen diving across the line to prevent another goal-bound effort before Graves notched her third and fourth goals to complete the rout.
The players of the match awards were shared by McMurray, Rogers and Maplethorpe.

Cambridge South 6s 0
The first team enjoyed a dozen goal haul but that was not the day’s top scoreline, that honour fell to the Thirds in Division Four North West, who scored four more.
Against a depleted Cambridge team, Spalding got off to a flying start with Kelly Tizzano’s bouncing bomb from the top of the D deflected in by Lucy McClements.
The visitors tried to hit straight back but were caught on the break and Sam Foston set up the second goal before Foston finished a rebound from a short corner to make it 3-0 with a goal of her own.
Tizzano utilised a deflection on the post from Foston’s strike to add another and then Jess Worth finished well after great work by Emily Wright to earn a 5-0 interval lead.
An encouraging talk from coach Tim Maltby reminded Spalding to keep their shape and use the width. That paid off within minutes when a ball to McClements from Foston went into the goal. A few minutes later McClements tapped in another goal in at the second attempt after a mazy run by Foston to complete her hat-trick.
The visitors’ hopes of a consolation were dashed when Holly Gleaves stopped an attack in its tracks and passed the ball round the back to Poppy Hooker. She took the ball into the attacking D and a flurry of shots at goal resulted in a short corner. That saw Tizzano finish from Jess Pilgrim’s pass from the rebound to make it 8-0. McClements then got another goal after good passing between Hooker and Pilgrim.
Spalding continued to pass the ball wide to leave the away side chasing shadows. Beautiful passing between Honor Pearson and Lisa Dean sent the ball through for Terri Robinson to set up Wright to push the ball past the goalkeeper to make it 10.
A brilliant pass from Alex Baker saw Worth on target at the far post. Another short corner allowed Foston to slam home the 12th, which soon became 13.
Tizzano completed her hat-trick, with Pilgrim the seventh player on target before McClements grabbed her fifth goal to complete the scoring.
