Chesterfield emerged as clear winners of the first-ever Spalding Voice Invitational Cup on an action-packed day of table tennis action on Saturday.

The favourites cruised to a 4-0 win in the final against Ely, having seen off hosts Spalding 5-1 in the group stage.

That was the only defeat for the Spalding and District Table Tennis League team of John Gilbert, Jean White, Tomasz Dobrzyn and Richard Hammond – who drew 3-3 with Ely and Grantham at the Castle Sports Complex.

The event was organised by table tennis expert Joe Beadle, in a bid to raise the profile of the sport in Spalding.

He said: “It wasn’t much of a surprise that Chesterfield won the tournament.

“They have a strong league that has 60 teams playing in five divisions.

“Spalding did well to get two draws and the team can be proud of themselves.

“I think everybody involved enjoyed themselves and I hope it went down well with the players.

“The trophy itself was very popular, so big thanks to The Spalding and South Holland Voice for sponsoring it for us.”
