Festive spirit comes to Spalding

Spalding’s Christmas Light Switch-on event was a festive success as people came to the town centre to enjoy the fun, shop locally and watch Spalding light up.

The event filled the town centre with more than 50 market stalls for people to browse alongside live festive entertainment, games, competitions, food, gifts and crafts.
Those who attended enjoyed live music and entertainment in Market Place from local singers, choirs and brass bands, as well as free craft activities and a visit from Beauty and the Beast, this year’s South Holland Centre pantomime.
Other festivities took place on the day, including Santa’s Grotto in Calthrops Solicitors brought to residents by the chairman Coun Andrew Woolf, a beautiful vintage carousel and swing boat ride and a fancy dress competition with great prizes including the winners, Matty and Izzy Goble (7), who turned on the beautiful Christmas tree lights at the end of carols by candlelight with Santa at 4.30pm.
Visitors were also able to take part in the launch of the returning Elf Trail, with cheeky elves hiding in participating shops across the town centre.
Shoppers have until December 30 to find them all and fill out their accompanying booklet, for the chance to win great prizes.
Coun Tracey Carter, Portfolio Holder for Communities and Operational Housing, said: “I am absolutely thrilled with the support from the community for our switch-on event, which attracted visitors to come along, support and shop locally.
“I would like to thank everyone for getting involved and spreading the Christmas spirit across the district.”
The Broad Street Methodist Church, Spalding United Reformed Church and St Mary’s and St Nicolas Church also got into the festive spirit with different themed activities throughout the day.
