Festival sparks village party

A Hindu festival lit up Pinchbeck on Saturday.

The Festival of Lights, Diwali, was officially on Monday, but villagers chose to start the celebration early with a day of activities at the Pinchbeck Community Hub.

Creative workshops were held during the day before a light show after dark in the evening.

Transported Arts and the Electric Egg company ran Diwali themed ‘Canotype’ workshop. It is a an early Victorian photographic technique that doesn’t require a camera.

There was also crafts on offer including the Indian one of Rangoli.

The evening session involved a projected light installation, storytelling and traditional food.

The whole event was organised by Pinchbeck parish councillor John Smith and local residents Hari Vegiraju and Samir Suretja.

Hari said: “The event was truly outstanding, the library team and Pinchbeck community were incredibly kind and welcoming.

“I deeply appreciated the warm wishes we received.

“Special thanks goes to John who supported us and organised everything.”

Coun Smith said the event came about after a conversation at the Pinchbeck Summer Family Fun Day.

“Samir and Hari have been a tremendous help and enabled us to communicate widely with local people. Everyone brought food, shared stories and lit sparklers together,” he said. “We decorated the library with lights and a beacon was lit.

“The idea to use Electric Egg to put on a workshop came from other discussions we were having and by joining them together we came up with the idea of creating Diwali Themed Cyanotypes and using these for an illuminated display.

“Everyone enjoyed themselves and it was great to hear about Diwali and why it is celebrated

“We will certainly be getting together next year!”
