Farewell class by Spalding’s fitness queen

There was an emotional farewell on Friday (June 2) as The Fitness Company owner Tracey Vowels took her final class at its current base.

A developer has bought the distinctive building – the former Geest Club – in Spring Gardens, Spalding.

Tracey said: “The building has been brilliant for our use over the last 23 years. However, I am fully aware that over the next five years it is going to require a lot of time, effort and money on its upkeep and felt that now was the right time for us to sell.”

Tracey’s interest in fitness was sparked as a receptionist for a gym run by Geoff Capes and Tony Slaney on the top floor of Elsom House in Broad Street. After running fitness classes in Moulton, Holbeach and Spalding, she became aerobics co-ordinator at the newly-built Castle Sports Complex in 1987, encouraging hundreds of women into the world of leotard-clad fitness.

And her dream of owning her own fitness studio became reality in 1997 when she and fiancé David Lewis bought the current premises.

Tracey will now enjoy some well-earned time off before the next chapter in her fitness career. For the last four years she has been updating her fitness qualifications to work more with the older adult and specialist population.
