Tomorrow (Friday, August 15) marks the 80th anniversary of VJ Day when the Japenese surrendered, effectively ending World War II.
To mark the occasion there are a number of events taking place in South Holland.
They include a VJ Day Flag Raising ceremony in Spalding which will take place at South Holland District Council’s officers on Priory Road at 10am.
It will be followed by a Royal Naval Association service, at the war memorials in Ayscoughfee Gardens from 10.45am.
A parade will also take place to mark VJ Day in Spalding on Sunday.
Those looking to attend can muster at Ayscoughfee 1.30pm, with a service to follow at St Mary and St Nicholas at 2pm.
If you really want to take a step back into the 1940s then Ayscoughfee is also hosting its 1940s weekend from 10.30am to 4pm on both Saturday and Sunday.
It will include displays, period vehicles, re-enactors, music, dancing and entertainment.
In Holbeach St Johns on Friday there will be a gathering at the village’s war memorial to coincide with the national two minute’s silence at 12pm.
“After that there will be a very short service and everyone is invited to refreshments in our newly decorated church,” a spokesman for the church said.
Holbeach Royal British Legion is hosting its own service at the town’s war memorial at 2pm on Friday.
Long Sutton is putting on afternoon of fun to mark VJ Day on Saturday (August 16) at Winfrey Park from 1pm to 5pm.
It will include craft stalls, tractors, PJ Mobile Disco, the very popular Rock Bus, silent disco, children’s characters, face painting and fairground and food stalls including Smokey’s Barbecue, Cakes and Ice Creams.
St Edmund’s Church in Sutton St Edmund is putting on an Act of Remembrance and Thanksgiving at the Burma Star Memorial in the church’s grounds.
That takes place from 11.50am and will include the national two minute’s silence behind held at 12pm.
