More European Ryder Cup glory at Surfleet

Spalding Golf Club’s senior captain John Patton steered the ‘European’ team to glory at the annual Ryder Cup Challenge at the Surfleet course.

With the ‘American’ team skippered by vice captain Tony Holbrook, the two teams battled out six holes of foursomes, followed by six holes fourballs and six holes played as singles.

The outcome was a win for Europe by 31.5-24.5 – and a new miniature replica Ryder Cup was presented by the losing captain to Europe.

There were prizes for the best scores on each side – and these were awarded to Dave McDermott (best European), John Reynolds (second European), Chris Harwin (best American), Mike Browning (second American).

The golf was followed by a meal – and all agreed it was a very successful event sure to be repeated.

  • Spalding’s seniors concluded their fixtures for the season with a 6.5-1.5 win over Thorney Lakes – meaning they went the entire season unbeaten at home. Overall they won 23, drew three and lost seven.

Results: John Patton & Roger Sanderson won 2&1; Tony Holbrook & Phil Thorold lost 6&4, Ged Cox & Barrie Hutson won 3&2; Roger Davey & Rod Hunt won 7&5; Mike Gould & Steve Leggett, won 5&4; Mike Browning & Jim Dobson won 4&2; Shaun Gibson & John Beba won 2&1; John Stanford & Peter Jullien halved.
