Emphatic Spalding IBC win in National Mixed Top Club tie

Spalding Indoor Bowls Club soundly beat Hornsea in the National Mixed Top Club competition at the neutral venue of Doncaster on Saturday.

With 16 match points on offer in five disciplines, Chelsea Tomlin was the first to get points on the board for Spalding with a comfortable 17-7 victory in the ladies singles.

Matt Whyers staged a comeback in the men’s singles to claim a 17-all draw, leaving Spalding requiring at least one victory and a draw from the mixed pairs, mixed triples and mixed fours.

Jordan Philpott and Annie Dunham found themselves behind early on in their mixed pairs match, but fought back to record a victory.

Meanwhile, Ruby Hill, Simon Lilley and Paul Simpson raced into an early lead in the triples and were pegged back towards the end, but they held on for a one shot victory to confirm the overall win.

In the fours, Rebecca Simpson, Gloria Haney, Ash Caress and Graham Smith also recorded a hard earned two-shot victory, which handed Spalding a 15-1 overall scoreline to book a place in the next round.

  • Spalding IBC’s over- 60s gained sweet revenge in their return home fixture against Louth last Thursday, winning 96-84 (16-2 points).

Spalding had two identical winning rinks, both won by five shots and each won 10 ends. One rink was skipped by Maurice Elding and included Gerald Horner, John Bailey and Tom Bell and the other was skipped by David Lunn and included Geoff Craft, Abs Belding and Mick Laidler.
