Edey feels late winner was justified as Spenny’s strike sends Holbeach United third

Daz Edey reckons that Saturday’s dramatic 2-1 win over Northampton ON Chenecks was no more than Holbeach United deserved.

Midfielder Spencer Tinkler hooked home a last-minute winner for the Tigers at Old Northamptonians Sports Ground, moving them back up to third in the ChromaSport UCL Premier Division in the process.

Danny Brooks had earlier given the Tigers a first-half lead, but that was wiped out by a penalty for the hosts.

Assistant manager Edey, who was again deputising for banned boss Seb Hayes, admitted that he “couldn’t see his side scoring” after seeing them blow a host of chances in the second half.

But he felt, although Holbeach weren’t at their best, Tinkler’s strike keeps them in the mix at the top end of the table.

“It was a nice little toe-d finish from Spenny,” joked Edey. “Obviously it was a great time for us to score.

“The pitch wasn’t great, it was a little bit bobbly.

“For the first 20 or 25 minutes, we played really well and deservedly took the lead.

“But then they had a good ten minute period or so and got their penalty, which looked the right call from the sideline. However, all of the lads were adamant that it wasn’t, to be fair.

“After that we were lucky not to fall behind, Nick Jackson had to make a really important last-ditch tackle to keep us level at half time.

“It was different in the second half, we absolutely dominated. They didn’t really have a kick, but the ball just wouldn’t drop for us.

“I was starting to get the feeling that it’d be a draw and couldn’t see us scoring.

“But Luke Avis and Joe Smith came off the bench and changed the game for us, fair play to them.

“It’s three points that we deserved and another win ticked off.

“We’re looking good on paper – but that’s not how the game is played. We need to rediscover our best form.”

Tigers: Drury, Braithwaite, Cartwright, N Jackson, A Jackson, Tinkler, Brooks, Bird, Zuerner (Avis), Leckie (Smith), Sanders. Not used: Harker.
