Easton feels that Spalding United’s new ‘blues brothers’ have given the squad a boost

Upbeat boss Matt Easton admits that the double swoop for brothers Bradley and Kieran Wells has given his Spalding United side a much-needed shot in the arm.

The attacking duo joined the Tulips late last week and both featured in the 2-1 win over Belper Town on Saturday (see page 37), making an instant impact in the process.

Both are expected to feature in Spalding’s huge basement battle at rock-bottom AFC Mansfield this Saturday (3pm), with Easton now feeling he’s just one more signing away from having a squad that he’s happy to work with.

“We’ve been very patient in the transfer market,” admitted the Tulips boss. “We always said that we’d wait for the right signings.

“To be fair, I’d have been happy with one top signings – but to get both Bradley and Kieran is a massive boost.

“For want of a better phrase, they’re both proper men. They are upbeat and expressive too – which is something we badly needed.

“That shone through on Saturday against Belper. We went 1-0 down very early on, but those two didn’t let the lads crumble; they weren’t aware that we’ve been struggling lately and the others responded.

“They’d been playing at Step Six, which is a surprise, but I’m very happy to have them both.

“I’m very happy with most aspects of the squad now. It has taken me a while to get players in, but I think we’re very close to the kind of team that I want now.

“Maybe one more signing would be enough.”

Easton admits that Saturday’s victory over Belper gave not only boosted the squad’s morale, but also gave him a massive boost.

He’s now hoping that the squad will follow that up with a victory at Mansfield, with a lack consistency one of his big bugbears this season.

“The lads were buzzing on Saturday. They needed that win. To be honest, I really needed it too.

“I think two more wins in December would see us in a much more comfortable position. We’ve been looking over our shoulders a lot and have struggled to put results together. If that changes on Saturday, we should have a bit of breathing space.”

Jack Fixter misses the game, but fellow defender Neal Spafford should return.
