Drunk driver who fled police later found covered in blood

A court has heard that a 20-year-old man failed to stop for police when they tried to stop him driving his car after he had been seen swerving in the road, revving his engine and jumping a red traffic light.

Prosecuting at Boston Magistrates Court, Marie Stace said officers saw Samuel Wheeler, of no fixed address but presently living in Washway Road, Moulton, leave a night club car park in Westlode Street and followed him and because of his bad driving, ‘blue lighted’ him but he failed to stop and made off at speed.

She said the officers lost sight of the car but later found Wheeler, covered in blood, in West Marsh Road and he said his car had been stolen but later admitted his car had gone into a hedge and also that he had no driving licence.

He gave a positive breath test but refused medical attention and gave a reading of 50 micrograms of alcohol in his breath, the legal limit being 35.

In interview he said he had been drinking with friends and was intending to go to McDonalds and didn’t stop for the police because he had no licence or insurance.

He told the court he had ‘stupidly’ decided to go out and get some food and said he had not ‘seen the red light at all’.

He was banned from driving for 16 months but was offered the drink drivers’ rehabilitation course, which will reduce the period of the ban by 16 weeks.

He was also fined £500 and ordered to pay a total of £135 in court costs and charges.
