Drug driver also turned out to be dealer

A drug dealer was brought to justice after he was spotted smoking cannabis  while driving, Lincoln Crown Court was told today (Thurs).

Ashley Woolley was driving in Spalding earlier this year when his behaviour attracted the attention of police.

Michael Cranmer-Brown, prosecuting, said: “The defendant was the only occupant of the vehicle. It was apparent that he was smoking what the officer believed to be a spliff.

“He was pulled over. The officer noticed that the car smelled of cannabis and it was plain that the driver was under the influence. His eyes were droopy and his speech was slurred.

“He got some cannabis out of the glove box and handed that to the police officer.”

Mr Cranmer-Brown said that Woolley’s phone was seized and text messages found on it revealed that he had been supplying cannabis to other people..

The prosecutor added “It appears there were 10 or so customers he had managed to supply with cannabis during the six weeks prior to his arrest. He himself had a dealer whom he was in regular contact with.

“He was boasting as to the quality of the cannabis. It would appear that he had started dealing and had the aim of doing so on a greater scale but for the fact that he was apprehended by the police.”

Woolley, 27, of Market Way, Pinchbeck, admitted supplying cannabis in January this year. He was given a 12 month community order with 180 hours of unpaid work.

The court was told he had no previous convictions apart from an offence of driving while under the influence of drugs on the day he was stopped by police.

Judge John Pini QC, passing sentence, told Woolley “It is rather fortunate you were caught at a time when you were going to expand this business or you could have found yourself in a lot more trouble.”
