A South Holland PCSO will be talking to residents near schools about allowing parents to park in their driveways to drop-off pupils.
Most towns and villages have issues with parking problems around schools, but Holbeach could be one of the first to offer a driveway solution.
PCSO Jane Gardner is asking if householders around schools would be willing to let parents park in their driveways briefly to help with traffic congestion.
She suggested a scheme where people taking part show a notice in their window to indicate that it’s OK for parking at drop-off and collection times for nearby schools.
PCSO Gardner said Holbeach was no worse than any other town with similar issues but she was hoping to be able to help.
She initially put the idea on the Facebook page of South Holland police.
“I have received a few positive responses while I’ve been out and about,” she said.
Her next step will be to approach residents with drives that could potentially be used.
“I just wanted to put some feelers out there first. I will be looking at a trial at one of the schools, probably Whaplode Primary, as they have been responsive to our actions. This will involve a letter drop by myself to local residents asking if they would be interested,” she added.
Residents would be given a sign, possibly of a thumbs-up, to display in a window when their driveway could be used.
PCSO Gardner, from the Holbeach Town and Rural team, said she was hopeful the trial would take place.
Among the comments were questions about responsibility if ‘visitors’ caused damage and others suggesting fewer people should be driving children to school as many lived within walking distance.
“I think parents should try car sharing to reduce the amount of vehicles. Parking on a person’s property will open a can of worms regarding public liability insurance,” said one.
PCSO Gardner said participating residents would be assisting the community at their own risk.
