Down and dirty with workshop

A composting workshop for families is coming to a Spalding allotment this month.

A family composting workshop for beginners is being held at Spalding’s Grow and Share Community Allotment.

While adults pick up tips on composting, children will be able to have a go at making a bird feeder and take part in a bug hunt.

The sessions, which are being organised jointly by Lincolnshire Community and Voluntary Service working with Anglian Water and Garden Organic, the Boston and South Holland Early Help Team and Lincolnshire County Council ‘s Children’s Services, will be held on Friday, February 21, from 11.30am to 1pm and 1.30pm to 3pm.

The Grow and Share Community Allotment in Fulney Lane South, Low Fulney, is a place where families can grow fruit and vegetables from different countries, share the harvest and meet new people.

Jackie Lane, Anglian Water project worker at LCVS, said: “These sessions are a great way to find out more about how easy composting is while the children enjoy the free activities we have going on.”

Collette Parker, Anglian Water Community Engagement Manager working on the Keep it Clear programme, added: “Composting at home is simple to do, produces something for free and helps save time, money and the planet – so what’s not to love?

“The idea is to help prevent food and fat waste going down the sink. There are new composting systems which will take cooked food, meat and bones as well as vegetable peelings and simple green waste.”

Participants will also receive a copy of Garden Organic’s Composting for Gardeners booklet to help them get started.

Sessions are free to attend but places are limited and must be booked in advance.
