Double delight for Tom in Spalding Cycling Club’s season finale

Spalding Cycling Club’s summer season of competitive events came to a climax with the aptly named “Dash Down the Delph” at Pode Hole.

The competition consisted of a series of full on sprints over distances of 250, 500, 750, 1000 metres.

Like in the previous three years, the club were blessed with a warm sunny afternoon – and as a bonus, an extremely and consistently strong backwind, such that on the longer distances some of the stronger riders probably wished they had higher gears to turn over.

Even with a number of regulars absent, the turn out was good with 22 riders ranging in age from seven to 79 – including several newcomers to competing.

To give some incentive, riders were put into age and gender categories; under-12s, under-14s, youths, ladies’ and men.

Not content with picking up first spot in the youths, Tom Wright showed the seniors a clean pair of heels as well.

Behind him, Neil Palmer was second and Rob McAlinden managed third, with Andy Bowser fourth and Nigel Howard fifth.

Special thanks have to go out to Sharon Fensom, and Joe and George Bellars for their timekeeping without which the event could not take place.

The racing was followed by an end of season barbecue for riders and spectators – showing that the club is not just about being on the bike but, enjoying the social side of the sport as well.

Palmer was the winner of the men’s category, with Tilly Gurney the leading lady, Velvet Bowser the under-14 victor and Tristan Bramma the under-12 champion.

p Spalding riders braved the strong winds to take part in the Bourne Wheelers 25 mile TT, which took place on the A15/A52 course between Quarrington Roundabout (Sleaford) and Donington Roundabout – and return.

Despite the fact that the wind made bike handling difficult, particularly when it was side on, Tim Lister maintained his fine form by taking second place in a time of 56.17mins with an average speed of 26.65mph.

James Bramma, who is having a really good end to his season, took ninth spot in 1.01:06hrs. averaging 24.5mph.

Spalding’s Simon Wright was also competing and came 18th in 1.09:29hrs, averaging 21.5mph.
